Looking Forward: Report on an ILSMH Symposium on the Future Role of Voluntary Associations (Madrid, Spain, November 1984).
This report provides an account of the discussions and issues from a symposium held by the International League of Societies for Persons with Mental Handicap in November, 1984. It describes: (1) the role of voluntary organizations in the future; (2) the need for strong advocacy of the organization's goals; (3) the issue of whether voluntary organizations should be service providers, service obtainers, change agents, or monitors of quality; (4) the need for involvement of more parents, more mentally handicapped, more professionals, and more members of the public; (5) the importance of planning for future development of the organization; and (6) the question of leadership.
