Development, Implementation and Evaluation of a Revised Physical Education Program for Wm. Horlick High School.
Chambasian, Susan M.
This document reports on a physical education teacher's attempts to design a physical education curriculum that would meet the needs and interests of students who were no longer required to take physical education due to changed graduation requirements. The report's first section provides an introductory overview of the problem and the teacher's proposed solution and also discusses research design and methodology. The second section details a review of research literature regarding physical education curricula. Section 3 discusses the first stage of the study, in which questionnaires regarding physical education needs and interests were developed and distributed to physical education students, physical education staff, guidance counselors, and physical education department chairpersons. The study's second stage is reported in the fourth section, where the teacher changed some of the curricular aspects to meet the needs and interests expressed by the questionnaire respondents. End results indicated that staff enjoyed teaching more, students participated with greater enthusiasm, and an improved environment more conductive to learning was developed. Needs still requiring attention included better organization, leadership, communication within the department, and a more demanding cognitive and psychomotor domain. References are included and the study instruments are appended. (CB)
