Less-Than-4-Year Awards in Institutions of Higher Education: 1983-85.

Drawing from data from the Degrees and Other Formal Awards Conferred Survey conducted annually as part of the Higher Education General Information Survey, this report looks at the less-than-4-year degrees and certificates awarded between 1983 and 1985, including limited data from 1975 for trend analysis. First, highlighted findings indicate that: (1) associate degrees and postsecondary certificates or diplomas increased more rapidly than all other awards granted in higher education institutions from 1975 to 1985, although their growth slowed after 1983; (2) associate degrees accounted for 75% of all less-than-4-year degrees; (3) over 75% of all awards were in four major fields of study, i.e., business and management, liberal/general studies, health sciences, and engineering technologies; and (4) in 1985, women outearned men in less-than-4-year degrees by a margin of 60,600 awards. Following an overview of trends of the 1975 to 1985 decade, the report examines awards by major field of study and instructional program in the combined category of less-than-4-year awards. The report then turns to the categories of associate degrees, 1-but-less-than-4-year awards, and less-than-1-year awards. The next sections focus on state findings for academic year 1985, institutional findings, and the occupational outlook of top-ranking instructional programs. Appendixes comprising more than half the document explain the survey methodology and offer detailed data tables including information on awards by sex of student, field of study, level of award, type of institution, and state or other area.
