The Adoption Process for Personal Computers by Faculties in Business Administration and Teacher Education at the College and University Level.

The adoption process for personal computers by faculties in business administration and teacher education at the graduate college and university level was studied. Diffusion Theory (Roberts, 1962) was tested as it related to the adoption of an innovation and the adoption process as the individual passed through the stages of the process (awareness, interest, evaluation, trial, and adoption--the stage at which the individual decides whether or not to actually purchase the product). The study sample consisted of 412 full-time faculty members at 5 accredited graduate schools and the instrument used was a self-reporting questionnaire. It was found that the adoption process did not have a moderating effect on the business administration and teacher education faculty at either the awareness or adoption stages. The questionnaire selected did not have a moderating effect to support the adoption process, possibly because the sample size was too small. Both the business and teacher education faculties showed common response to certain variables, such as the price (ranking first in importance), product attributes (ranking second), information about the product (ranking third), and usage or function (ranking fourth). A literature review considers the evolution and importance of the personal computer as it has been integrated into the college curricula, and the various uses of the personal computer, along with research in the field of computer-oriented programs.
