Vocational Education Support for Single Parents and Homemakers. Final Report from 7/1/86 - 6/30/87.
Miami-Dade Community Coll., FL. North Campus.
A single parent and homemaker project was established at Miami-Dade Community College (North Campus) to promote nontraditional vocational education. The primary thrust of the project was directed toward those who required economic self-sufficiency with a minimum amount of time spent in college training programs. Generally, the goals of the project included recruiting single parents and homemakers into vocational education programs that would provide them with improved employment prospects and advancement possibilities. Emphasis was given to nontraditional career areas that offer a high wage potential. Personal, academic, and career counseling was offered in conjunction with support groups, workshops, and classes. Employability skills training was also made available, as well as employment counseling and referrals. A total of 175 clients of all ages and ethnic backgrounds were given a variety of services, including vocational career counseling to enable them to meet their goals of self-sufficiency and personal advancement. (Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, include correspondence, forms, contact information, a list of prospective employers for job referral, and an 83-page career manual that offers information on 22 nontraditional career options.)
