Single Parents/Displaced Homemakers: Balancing Family Living, Education and Employment. Final Report from 7/01/86 to 6/30/87.
Jackson County Adult Education Center, Marianna, FL.
The goal of the single parent/homemaker project was to integrate participants into society as competent members of a comfortable and self-supporting family unit. The targeted population consisted largely of younger single parents and/or homemakers (primarily female) who lacked education and skills to function effectively as contributing citizens. A counselor conducted over 100 initial interviews; 21 participants were enrolled in the program. All were in need of tutorial services to bring them to an educational level required for satisfactory job placement. During their participation, each student either earned high school credits or raised his or her literacy level in adult basic education. Students gained in career knowledge and employability skills through individual personal counseling, small group discussion, class activities in the vocational classes, use of multimedia materials (with an emphasis on current information), workbooks, and interest surveys. They also gained an insight into their own personalities and ways of coping with life situations. Particularly useful were resource people from local industry, the employment service, and two area vocational-technical schools. A significant outcome was the increased awareness of educational and employment possibilities in this group. (Appended materials, comprising half the document, include forms, curriculum framework for the courses, and resource listing.) (YLB)
