Single Parents or Homemakers. Individualized Career Oriented Program for Equity (I.C.O.P.E.). Final Report from July 1, 1986 to June 30, 1987.
Central Florida Community Coll., Ocala.
A project provided educational/preemployment training information about options, resources, and support services available for single parents/homemakers to help them become gainfully employed. Specific program activities were aimed at renewing self-esteem, developing employability skills, and learning about community resources and vocational education programs. During the period October to June, 1986-87, 79 individuals were served through these activities. Classes were held for two weeks with the participants receiving approximately 45 hours of training. As a result of attending the classes and through the cooperative efforts of the community college and community resources, 55 percent of the participants either became employed or entered into job training or college courses. A coalition of nine community agencies provided current information and assisted participants to tap into job market opportunities. Pre- and post-self-assessments indicated an observable improvement in self-confidence, ability to communicate, interview skills, salesmanship, problem solving, creativity, time management, and networking. Additional services were support groups for women in transition and transportation assistance for enrollees in vocational education programs. The support group functioned in psychological and educational resource capacities. Appendixes, which make up about 60 percent of the document, include publicity items, self-assessment forms and data, project activities, and correspondence. Also appended is a seven-page survey form providing data about participants. (YLB)
