British Isles Field Experience: An Initiative in International Education.
Martin, William J.
The British Isles Field Experience (BIFE) program was initiated at Williamsport Area Community College (WACC) to provide a group of WACC faculty and staff members with individual and group activities of a personal, professional, and cultural nature in order to promote an international perspective that can be infused into student, collegiate, and community contacts. Specific group and individual objectives included: (1) consumating a formal relationship with a technical college in the British Isles; (2) serving as a focal point for all college activities in the area of international education; and (3) developing a familiarity with other cultures and a motivation for generating international educational experiences within the college. This report chronicles the BIFE project's development, implementation, and results, as well as its impact on WACC's international program and staff development. Part I provides information on the project development. Part II presents the individual action plans developed by the participants. Part III is a field journal providing daily notes from the field experience. Part IV offers follow-up on how the participants incorporated their experiences into their teaching. Appendices include letters to corporate program sponsors, and a field itinerary. (EJV)
