Sex Equity. Final Report from August 1, 1986 to June 30, 1987.
Schmidt, Dennis
The Sex Equity Project for Lake County (Florida) Schools was undertaken to reduce sex bias and stereotyping among students and to encourage exploration of nontraditional occupations. The 1986-87 project focused on middle and high school students by assembling and distributing brochures and by making classroom presentations to eighth-grade students. High school and middle school administrators, guidance counselors, and some faculty members were also given brief inservice awareness programs on the need to reduce sex bias and stereotyping and on ways of doing so. On the follow-up teacher survey, only one teacher failed to indicate that the program should be repeated, and most rated the material on nontraditional jobs as either very or extremely important. Twenty-six percent of the students surveyed said that they had changed their ideas about the kind of work they wanted to do, and 50 percent said that the materials made them aware of nontraditional employment opportunities for the first time. It was decided to offer a similar program to all students in grades 9 through 12 and to develop an awareness program targeting local businesses and civic and business organizations so as to make it easier for students to enter nontraditional employment if they so desire. (Appendixes include a brochure describing available vocational and technical programs, suggestions for teachers on how to foster sex fairness in students, a brochure on nontraditional occupations, a career interest instrument, occupations having 12 or more annual openings in the two Florida counties nearest to the project site, minutes from a high school principals' meeting on the need for programs to eliminate sex bias and stereotyping, and student and teacher evaluations of the sex fairness materials and seminars presented.)
