Displaced Homemaker Single Parent Project. Final Report from September 1, 1986 to June 30, 1987.
The Indian River Community College (Florida) program prepares people who qualify as displaced homemakers and single parents to enter or reenter the work force and vocational training. The program is designed to meet the needs of the target population by offering pre-employment information and skills, guidance, community referral, and vocational training in the areas of fastest growth as identified by the Department of Labor and Employment Security. A three-week single parent and displaced homemaker program includes self-awareness, testing, vocational exploration, and employability skills. Seminars addressing specific needs have been presented. Tuition money has been distributed to qualified persons so that they may return to school for vocational training. Outreach and networking continues regularly to reach the people who move into the area. Currently, 116 qualifying women have been placed in vocational education programs. Of the 72 students being served by the Women's Program, 42 will continue training and 17 have been placed in training-related employment. Originally the program sought to place only 50 qualifying people and had requested $5,300.00 for tuition. Four times the original grant request money has been distributed towards tuition, however, since 116 applicants were found to qualify. Fewer than 1% of the women served were 55 or older, and no men applied for tuition aid. More time is needed to recruit and meet the needs of this population.
