This report is compiled from information provided by National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) member schools in a 1986 survey of student and staff counts and financial operations. Of the country's approximately 110,000 elementary and secondary schools, it is estimated that about 1,700 are independent schools; half are NAIS members surveyed in this report. Detailed data on member schools' enrollments are presented in section 2, including day and boarding enrollments by region, 1985-86 and 1986-87, grade enrollments, 1985-86 and 1986-87, number of schools by school type, grade level category, and student type, 1982-83 to 1986-87, and enrollment by school type, grade level, student type and day/boarding category, 1982-83 to 1986-87. The personnel count and median student-teacher ratios for 1986-87 are reported in section 3. Section 4 details enrollments and percentages of minority students and staff, including percentages of minority student enrollment by racial/ethnic group, minority students in Hawaiian and territorial schools in 1986-87, and minority teachers by racial/ethnic group and by school type. Financial aid data for 1985-86 are presented in section 5 in terms of school type, income sources, and aid to faculty, staff children, and minority children. The final section provides information on financial operations in 1985-86 for girls' schools, boys' schools, and coeducational schools.
