Establishing University-School District Collaboration in the Education of Teachers.
McInerney, William, D.
A collaborative relationship established between the Department of Education at Purdue University in Indiana and the Twin Lakes School Corporation of Monticello, Indiana, sought to design preservice experiences enabling prospective teachers to develop and enhance critical thinking skills in their pupils. The development of this collaborative relationship necessitated training for school district staff and college faculty and the creation of a curriculum and experience program for the prospective teachers. As the relationship developed, a greater need was seen for improved coordination and communication between university and school district personnel. It was found that the cultures and environments of the two organizations were different. Classroom teachers involved in the program were particularly concerned about the sincerity of the university faculty and the possible loss of power. Teachers expressed positive attitudes, however, regarding released time for planning, involvement on committees, and professional treatment. Plans continue for further improvement of the collaborative relationship. (CB)
