Beyond the Classroom: Preparing Teaching Professionals to Advocate for Themselves and Others. A Beginning.
DeHardt, Susanne M.
This practicum was designed to provide teaching professionals with advocacy information, skills, techniques, and resources in order to increase participant awareness and self-confidence, and, ultimately, their community involvement. The primary method used to address this goal was the development and presentation of three workshops. These were extended with Legislation Updates sent to the participants after the workshops. The content of each workshop varied somewhat to meet the interests and needs of each group. To evaluate the impact of this practicum, participants were asked to complete evaluation forms immediately after each workshop session. After a certain amount of time, participants were mailed a Feedback Form which allowed them to report on advocacy actions in which they had participated. Results indicated that not all subjects met the workshop criteria but some subjects exceeded them. Results also showed that 16% of the participants had done some networking of the material presented, and 10% had been involved in some kind of advocacy action. (Author/BG)
