Information on the 27,430 degrees conferred in Connecticut colleges in 1985-1986 is presented, with attention to discipline and level of the degree and the recipients' gender and minority status. Trends include the following: completion rates at private colleges are higher than at public colleges; the number of bachelor's degrees continued to rise after a slight drop in the late 1970s; master's degrees also increased over the past 2 years, although numbers remained lower than they were 10 years ago; associate's degrees declined in recent years; doctoral degrees reached an all-time low in 1985-1986; professional program degrees increased slowly but steadily; business-related fields continued to be the most popular disciplines; the long decline in education degrees appeared to stabilize in 1985-1986; women earned 52.9% of all degrees in 1985-1986; women earned the majority of degrees at and below the master's levels, while men earned the majority of degrees in doctoral and professional programs. Policy implications of the degree-granting patterns are briefly addressed, including effects of the increased percentages of part-time students, the slight upturn in the number of education degrees awarded, and the decline in the number of associate and doctoral degrees awarded.
