The Recruiting Game: Toward a New System of Intercollegiate Sport. Second Edition, Revised.
Rooney, John F., Jr.
Problems in recruitment for big-time collegiate sports are updated, and an eleven-point improvement program is proposed. Statistics on football and basketball recruitment are updated, many through the 1985 season. New focus is placed on "blue chip" recruiting, and maps of recruiting by selected institutions, conferences, and states are provided. An assessment of cheating and punitive action by the National Collegiate Athletic Association is featured. Success-oriented variables for the 1952-1983 period are the basis of a new analysis of performance. For schools that are in the sports entertainment business, a super league based on a number of past performance variables is suggested. In addition, new formats for conference and post-season playoffs are suggested. Also covered are the origin and growth of intercollegiate athletics, the essentials of recruiting, factors affecting the geography of recruiting, and the national dimensions of football and basketball recruiting. Recruiting patterns at selected colleges are compared, along with the migration of high school athletes in a number of states. A journal of recruiting activities of the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team for 1974-1975 is also included. (SW)
