Guide for Teaching German in the Elementary Schools, Level 1, Grade 4.
Hosford, Helga; Farr, Marianne
The guide is designed to assist elementary school German teachers by giving suggestions on the nature of material, structure, and sequence of linguistic items to be introduced in the first year. It contains suggestions for 10 teaching units, each containing vocabulary, grammar items, cultural information, songs and rhymes to reinforce vocabulary and present language in larger utterances, and a review consisting of tests and subtests. The approach uses progressive sequencing of language skills and frequent and varied forms of practice: extension drills, substitution drills, replacement drills, transformation drills, extensive questions and answers, and games. Suggested teaching techniques include high teacher visibility, visual materials, directed play, use of larger utterances, use of materials that help students regularize structures, rewards for good performance, and maximum classroom use of German.
