Educational Enrollment, Attainment and the Effects of Educational Achievement in the Midwest.
Witte, John F.
This report summarizes education data obtained from 1980 census individual record files for the seven states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin) that comprise the north central education region. The report and the appended data tables are based on five percent samples of the midwest region and each of its seven states. The data presented were collected to produce a common database across states, providing policymakers and researchers with relevant, comparable information on educational topics. Special emphasis is placed on problems of at-risk youth. It is noted that the data will be used in parallel and subsequent studies directly related to assessing the financial impact of the at-risk population and addressing specific problems of employment and job training in the region. The appended data presentation is outlined and explained in the text. Data in appended tables focus on educational enrollment; educational attainment; and the effects of varying educational attainment on employment, household status, income, and occupation. The text contains a summary of selected results in these areas. The report concludes that the younger cohort is significantly better educated than the older cohort, but that for the less educated among the young, the consequences are considerably more serious than for the less educated among the older cohort. Forty-two tables are appended. (NB)
