A Plan to Improve Psychological Services from the Public School System to the Private School Sector.
This practicum was designed to improve the quality of psychological referrals from private schools to the public school system by establishing a consultative conference procedure. The primary purpose of the conference was to establish open communication between teachers and the school psychologist and to provide more immediate psychoeducational alternatives for teachers to implement in the classroom. Consultative services hence became available to all cases regardless of eligibility for psychoeducational testing. A program was established wherein each referral went through the consultative conference procedure with teachers from the referring private school, parents, and school psychologist present at the meeting. The consultative conference procedure was evaluated through teacher and parent questionnaires. Results indicated significant support for the conference procedure from more than 80 percent of parents and teachers. The data strongly indicated that the consultative services were perceived as highly beneficial in impacting the quality of services rendered to children with behavioral and academic problems. The positive results obtained in this pilot program have moved administrative officials to adopt the consultative conference as part of the public school system's procedure for exceptional education and on referrals from private schools. (Appendices contain parent and teacher evaluation forms, consultative conference assessment recommendation forms, the Dade County, Florida Public Schools Department of Exceptional Student Education evaluation forms, and a memorandum of commendation. Tables give information on parents' response/evaluation, teachers' response/evaluation, and a comparative analysis of services.) (Author/NB)
