The Education System in Greece. [Revised.]
EURYDICE Central Unit, Brussels (Belgium).; Ministry of Education, Athens (Greece).
The education policy of the Greek government rests on the basic assumption that effective education is a social goal and that every citizen has a right to an education. A brief description of the Greek education system and of the adjustments made to give practical meaning to the provisions on education in the Constitution is presented in the introductory chapter. Chapter 1, "Primary Education," examines nursery schools, primary schools, and factors common to both. Chapter 2, "Secondary Education (Lower and Upper Cycle)," looks at the gymnasia, the lower cycle secondary education; the lykeions, the higher cycle secondary education; and middle technical and vocational education. Chapter 3, "New Legislation on Primary and Secondary Education," describes the Pedagogic Institute as an official state educational research and study organization, childrens centers, four kinds of lykeion, in-service teacher training, and a central council for special education. Chapter 4, "Tertiary Education," reviews higher technical and vocational education and university level education. Additional topics discussed include private education, special education, the movement of young people into the job market, the education of the children of Greek migrant workers, the education of children from foreign countries, and adult education. The document contains 17 tables of statistical data concerning the educational system of Greece. (APG)
