Data on 1976-1984 college and university enrollment trends are presented, based on the Higher Education General Information Survey. Information is provided on higher education enrollments by control and level of institution, student sex, and full-time and part-time attendance status. Trends in enrollment are for the 50 states and the District of Columbia, along with data for undergraduate, graduate, unclassified, and first-professional students at public and private institutions. Total enrollment rose annually from 11 million in 1976 to 12.5 million in 1983, a total increase of 13%. Enrollment in 1984 was the lowest since fall 1980. The traditional college-going population age group began to decrease in 1982. About 96% of the increase in total enrollment from 1976 to 1984 occurred among women. The changes in enrollment occurred more among part-time students (20%) than among those attending full-time (6%). One factor in the increase of part-time enrollment was the increased enrollment of students 25 years old and older. Female part-time students increased 45% over the 8-year period. Public institutions accounted for 94% of total two-year college enrollments in 1984. (SW)
