Integration in Practice 1,2,3. A Practical Look at Three Integration Schemes in Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive Schools.
Orton, Christine
Using photographs and informal narrative, three case studies illustrate the integration of handicapped with nonhandicapped students on a variety of age levels, and with a variety of special needs, at three locations in England. Charnwood, an independent preschool center in Stockport, Cheshire, serves 50 young children with a variety of disabilities (e.g., cerebral palsy, hearing impairments) integrated among a total of 170 children (ages birth to 5) attending opportunity groups and structured playgroups each week. Castlecroft (serving ages 3-11) and Smestow (for students ages 11-18) in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, are neighboring elementary and secondary schools which integrate students with visual impairment into the normal school environment. A supportive rather than protective environment is emphasized, with visually impaired students receiving needed special resources but the same curriculum as the nonhandicapped. Northumberland Park School in Haringey, North London, integrates 14 children with physical and sensory disabilities into a total of 1,100 students ages 11-18. Handicapped students remain on the rolls of two referring special schools, with support staff maintaining links between the special and integrated settings. (JW)
