A Guide to Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Elementary Grades (4-6). Secondary Grades (7-12).
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Curriculum and Instruction.
This guide presents strategies and worksheets for helping students in grades 4 through 12 learn about the important contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the achievement of civil rights. The guide is presented in two parallel parts, the first for the elementary and the second for the secondary grades, and both parts are divided into seven strategies, each developing a separate theme. The suggested lessons and activities are intended to help students be able to: (1) describe the political and social situation of black Americans during the first part of the twentieth century; (2) analyze the influence of childhood experiences on Dr. King's ideas and feelings; (3) explain Dr. King's philosophy of nonviolent resistance; (4) evaluate nonviolence as a method for winning change; (5) recognize the many facets of Dr. King's concern and involvement; and (6) assess the contribution of Dr. King to history. The guide includes photographs, poems, historical background, and other materials as part of the curriculum plan. (KH)
