To evaluate the effectiveness of their program for preparing elementary school teachers, Western Oregon State College collected data from 13 first-year elementary school teachers recommended for certification in 1986. Information was collected on beginning teachers' perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the general preparation received, current teaching assignment, involvement with microcomputers, and selected demographic variables. The teachers ranked themselves and the preparation program fairly highly in all the variables assessed, including planning and preparation, performing instructional functions, classroom management, knowledge of subject matter, evaluation of instruction, communication skills, work with handicapped students, interpersonal relations, and computer skills. Strong agreement was seen by the teachers' cooperating principals. First-year teachers did, however, show concern about the amount of material, content, and the fairly rapid pace of the instructional program although the data indicated a high level of satisfaction with the teacher preparation program at Western Oregon State College.
