This document offers science teachers a reference for various student projects that are intended to increase student interest in engineering, science, and technology. The book contains information, guidelines, and specific ideas for: (1) engineering design competitions; (2) engineering problem solving competitions; and (3) short-term mini-projects. The engineering design competitions emphasize team participation in the design, building, and testing of workable projects in a competitive atmosphere. Included in this section are design parameters, the materials limitations, and the testing and scoring procedures. The engineering problem solving section empahsizes the "pen and paper" approach to the technical, economic and social aspects of engineering problems. These competitions stress the use of research, investigation, decision-making and communication skills. The mini-projects are designed to be completed during a two-hour session and can be set up in a competition manner also. Sample problem solutions are included. (TW)
