Written as a companion resource to "Early Childhood Essential Elements," a document developed by the Education Service Center, Region VI, Huntsville, Texas, this first volume of a two-volume activity guide provides activities enhancing children's cognitive, communication, and motor skills. Activities included in the guide are compiled from a variety of sources, represent many levels of difficulty, require an assortment of materials, and employ several different approaches. While the level of difficulty is not coded, activities usually can be modified or expanded to present challenges at different levels. Each section contains a list of readily available or easy to make materials. While behavioral, developmental, interactional, and problem solving approaches are appropriate for specific activities, many activities in the guide are best presented behaviorally. The format of each activity provides title, statement of purpose, list of materials, description of activity, indication of time required, list of related skills/developmental area, suggested instructional strategies, activity evaluation guidelines, and helpful hints for implementation. At least 50 activities are provided for each developmental domain. (RH)
