The Astor Program for Young Gifted Children: Ten Years Later.
Ehrlich, Virginia Z.
An evaluation of the Astor Program for Gifted Children, introduced in 1973, in the New York City public schools is presented. This study is a follow-up of the "pioneer" pupils (those accepted during 1974-76). Sources of data included: a student questionnaire; student attitude scales; a parent questionnaire; a principal questionnaire; a teacher questionnaire; test results from standardized achievement tests in reading and mathematics; personal interviews with program personnel; classroom observations; interviews with pupils; and miscellaneous information from the director. Following introductory and background information, data obtained from principals, teachers, parents and students (both current achievement and reactions to their early experience) are presented, followed by a discussion of factors (such as timelines, parent involvement, and specific program goals) influencing the success of the Astor program. The questionnaires and rating scales utilized in the study are appended. (KM)
