Working Together: A Profile of Local Television Reporters and Photographers.
Smith, Conrad
A study examined television reporters and photographers as a journalistic unit to see if their perspectives about news coverage coincided, weighing also the visual component of television news. Subjects, 793 reporters and 438 photographers culled from 200 randomly chosen network affiliates, completed questionnaires about working conditions, job commitment, and attitudes towards television news. Findings indicated that both reporters and photographers considered news video a powerful means of communication with its own grammar and syntax, independent of words. This conclusion is compatible with previous studies suggesting pictures are not facts but symbols (in the same sense that words are symbols), but it is different from the traditional scholarly approach that considers news pictures illustrations rather than separate means of communication. Both groups saw considerable potential for abuse of TV's visual power, believing a news source can appear in a positive or negative way depending on photographic production techniques. Results also indicated (1) that reporters earn more than photographers, (2) that reporters are more mobile and better educated, (3) that both groups agree they have a good working relationship but low morale, as well as even lower opinions of the journalistic quality of their stations' news product, and (4) that despite frustrations, both groups are committed to their work. (Tables of data are included and 17 footnotes are appended.) (NKA)
