Putting the Byte on College Counseling.

This document describes some of the uses a high school counselor may have for a personal computer. A variety of sample forms are included which illustrate these uses. Selected computer software is briefly reviewed. Recordkeeping on the computer is discussed and three basic files kept for each counselee are described: (1) an information file; (2) a record file; and (3) a note file. Data files created for individual students through their high school years are explained, including basic information files, anecdotal information files, records of academic progress, a 4-year plan for students, and a file of activity and honor award information. Student worksheets to provide information for files are described, and the uses of file information to compose letters to parents, inform students individually of current information, personalize letters of recommendation to accompany student college application forms, and commend students on honors received are explained. Word processing and record updating are discussed. Sample forms and letters are included throughout the manual. (NB)
