This guide is intended for use in teaching a parenthood education program in which adolescents work with young children while learning about effective parenting. The program's 26 objectives are outlined in the first section of the guide. The second section is a lesson plan containing a content outline with cross-referenced suggested learning activities and references. The following course topics are covered in the outline: parenting; understanding children (personality, emotions, needs, defense mechanisms, self-concept, development); cognition; communication; discipline; play; play safety; art; music, movement, and dance; food and eating habits; mechanics of playschool; prenatal development and birth; infant care and development; toddler development; development of the school-age child; adolescent development; moral development in children; violence; child abuse and neglect; cultural differences; laws, rights, and community resources; children's health (diseases, safety); sex-role stereotyping; theories of development and learning; special family situations (exceptional children, adoption and foster care, employed mothers, single parents, and stepparents); family life cycles; financial aspects of parenthood; and careers.
