This handbook provides educators with a practical planning and implementation guide for K-12 curriculum improvement in a context called career education. It also gives some direction for planning beyond the high school experience for continued learning and work placement. Chapter 1 establishes a rationale explaining the value of career education. Chapter 2 provides the terminology and definitions necessary to acquaint readers with the Iowa Career Education Model. Chapter 3 identifies points to consider for initiating/reviewing career education programs in local districts and for identifying staff roles and responsibilities. Sample checklists for planning are included. Chapter 4 provides information about the assessment and evaluation process as well as sample instruments. Chapter 5 contains current goal statements for curriculum areas. Hints and clues, including activity ideas, are given for incorporating needed curriculum improvements using career education concepts. Chapter 6 describes support components needed for a comprehensive career education program. These include guidance, community, media resource center, Career Information System of Iowa, and Project Discovery. Chapter 7 contains selected information to assist teachers working with disadvantaged and handicapped students. Methods of instruction, postsecondary transition, curriculum, and career development resources are identified. Review and discussion questions follow each chapter. (YLB)
