The Utah Newspaper Project. Final Report.
Holley, Robert P.
As part of the United States Newspaper Program, the Marriott Library at the University of Utah undertook the Utah Newspaper Project, a major microfilming project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This report reviews the background of the project, describes the grant application process, and discusses the activities of: (1) the planning phase, during which the project sponsored a conference and compiled a preliminary checklist of 920 newspapers from secondary sources; and (2) the Bibliographic Control Phase, during which staff inventoried 525 Utah newspapers and 803 out-of-state newspapers in 32 newspaper repositories to amass a total of 3,298 local holdings records. In addition, a discussion of continuing concerns focuses on publicity, gifts and loans from the public, and public service activities. It is concluded that newspapers in Utah are now under good bibliographic control both for cataloging and for union listing. Notes are provided; and appendices include a sample page from the Utah Newspaper Checklist and listings of titles cataloged by state, titles cataloged by Utah newspaper depositories, and newly discovered newspapers microfilmed during the project.
