Science Orders Systems and Operations Manual.
Kriz, Harry M.
This manual describes the implementation and operation of SCIENCE ORDERS, an online orders management system used by the Science and Technology Department of Newman Library at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Operational since January 1985, the system is implemented using the SPIRES database management system and is used to (1) provide orders management for the collection development staff, (2) monitor the performance of approval plans, and (3) provide current order data to teaching and research faculty through the campus local area network. A description of the system provides information about the database structure, the STPROTOS public protocol subfile, report protocols, database maintenance tasks, loading orders data, receiving books, new books list preparation, purging aged orders, and database management. Sixteen appendices describe procedures for creating and sharing the SCIENCE ORDERS database, and list system file definers, file definitions, and SPIRES database management system protocols.
