Development of a Longitudinal File of Financial, Faculty, Enrollment, and Institutional Characteristics Data.
Gilmartin, Kevin J.
The content and format decisions and the data sources that were used to construct a longitudinal file of the characteristics of U.S. colleges and universities for academic years 1974-1975 through 1977-1978 are described, and forms and record layouts are provided, including data element descriptions. The file contains selected statistics extracted from the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) financial surveys plus certain criterion measures to validate the financial health indicators. The scope has broadened until 16 data sources were merged to describe the changes over time of the financial and nonfinancial conditions of colleges and universities. The file is intended to help researchers and policymakers develop and monitor financial health indicators. The file is easier to use than the original data sources because (1) statistics from many separate files have been aggregated into a single record for each institution; (2) the cumbersome design of the HEGIS files has been eliminated; and (3) statistics have been added for institutions that merged. Extensive documentation of the database is presented. (SW)
