The Preterite and the Perfect in BBC News Bulletins: The Case for a Text Linguistic Approach.
Elsness, Johan
A study of the preterite and the perfect in English examined their use in 12 radio news bulletins of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The study analyzed the distribution of all of the broadcasts' verb phrases over verb forms and clause types, time references (previously given and new-time), the presence or absence of adverbials or other specifiers, and whether the time reference extends to the time of usage or is wholly located in the past. The results of the analysis are discussed and the differences in verb form usage in spoken and written news bulletins are briefly examined.(MSE)
