This document provides a reference guide for the Teaching Performance Profile--Diagnostic Evaluation created by the Digicator System, Inc., in response to an acknowledged need for better instructional performance of teachers. This guide is one product of a system designed to synthesize knowledge on teaching and make it available and applicable to teachers from all levels of instruction, giving them feedback and insight into their performance and allowing behaviors to be observed, categorized, appraised, analyzed, and quantified for the purpose of diagnosis, improvement, and evaluation. Components of the system are as follows: (1) standard teaching tasks are identified; (2) a record of teaching behaviors in scorable form is developed; (3) diagnostic information that allows the planning of remedial training and measures changes that occur is obtained; (4) a database is developed so researchers can develop standards and study related aspects of teaching; and (5) scores and resulting data provide a base for managing instructional development programs. Teacher performance characteristics are described in the areas of planning skills, use of materials, knowledge of content, lesson design, evaluation/feedback, meeting needs of all learners, motivation, reinforcement, classroom management, and professionalism; references are included.
