In response to the need to remain a leader in teacher education in Missouri, Southeast Missouri State University analyzed a variety of sources that suggested new directions in teacher education. A review was conducted of current literature, and a study was made of the revised National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards. ERIC Resource Reviews from the Clearinghouse on Teacher Education were studied as well as current newsletters from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). Course syllabi currently used in the campus teacher education program were inspected, and a cost/benefit analysis was made of the "Report of the Task Force on Alternatives for Clinical Laboratory Experiences in Teacher Education." Informal comments and written suggestions were solicited from individuals on and off campus. Recommendations, directions, and implications for the future of teacher education, with particular emphasis on programs at Southeast Missouri State University, are presented. Topics covered include: field based experiences; school/university relationships; competency based education; research orientation; academic standards; program content; accreditation standards; and cost analysis. Seventeen recommendations for Southeast Missouri State University's teacher education program are listed. (CB)
