Final Evaluation of the 1985-86 After-School Program. OEA Evaluation Report.
Horowitz, Sandra V.
An evaluation was made of the implementation of New York City's After-School Program in 5 community school districts, involving 82 elementary schools with 7,474 children who were regularly left without direct adult supervision before and after school. After the Chapter I introduction which provides background information, an overview, and a description of evaluation procedures, Chapter II of the evaluation report details the selection criteria used for choosing schools, hiring staff members, and determining the eligibility of students for participation. It also describes characteristics of both students and staff members, discusses staff training, and describes the type of programing available in the After-School Program. Chapter III describes staff members' ratings of the goals and objectives of the program, presents attendance patterns, enumerates the strengths of the program from the perspective of the staff members, and delineates the problems experienced by staff during the 1985-86 school year. The fourth and concluding chapter presents the implications of the evaluation findings, makes recommendations for changes in the program, and highlights issues pertinent to the next annual evaluation.
