Guidance Every Day: A Helping Manual for Early Childhood Teachers.
Feldman, Richard; And Others
Intended to help early childhood educators examine ways in which guidance can be infused into daily instruction, this manual aims to enable teachers to act as facilitators in the guidance process without adding a new assignment to an already busy schedule. Section A describes the integration of five guidance strands into the early childhood curriculum: developing a positive self-image; developing effective interpersonal relationships; developing understanding of emotions, feelings, and values; developing decision-making abilities; and developing career awareness. Section B provides an overview of children's development from 5 to 8 years of age. Sections C and D, respectively, describe the interactive teacher and the interactive setting. Specific attention is briefly given in section C to the ways in which attendance and job charts can function in classrooms, and the implications of learning centers for reaching guidance goals. Section E describes the integrated curriculum and provides implementation charts which show how interactive teachers have integrated the guidance strands with social studies projects for kindergarten and first- and second-grade classes. Section F briefly discusses children's books on guidance-related issues. An extensive bibliography lists books concerning families and relationships; emotions; separation; specialized areas dealing with, for example, bilingual or handicapped children; and other major issues, such as hospitalization or abduction.
