A Study of Opinions & Attitudes of the Sisters of Mercy: Members of Mercy High Education Colloquium, Mercy Secondary Education Association, Mercy Elementary Education Network.
Sheehan, Lourdes; And Others
To assess opinions among members of the education networks of the Sisters of Mercy, a 4-part, 45-item questionnaire was distributed in 1986. Respondents represented higher education, secondary education, and elementary education. Results from major superiors of the Union and its nine provinces and each of the independent congregations are reported separately. Of the 507 questionnaires mailed, 336 were returned for a response rate of 72 percent. This monograph presents tables of data and discussions about respondents; institutional involvement; values, collaboration, and sponsorship; and future directions. Respondents reflected shared values and belief in their educational mission. Recommendations drawn from five opinion categories include the following: (1) Concerning charism, administrators should ensure placement of sisters in ministries that serve the poor and the ability of some poor to attend Mercy-sponsored institutions. Concern for women and for excellence should continue. (2) Regarding sponsorship, development of a lay leadership as teachers and administrators is needed and greater support of nonsponsored educational ministries should be given. (3) Regarding networking, greater involvement is needed with other Catholic educational institutions and among the three Mercy-sponsored groups. (4) Concerning collaboration, sponsorship of alternative educational settings and a common focus for sisters in education are desirable. (5) Concerning "system," the union should sponsor needed institutions and systems similar to health care ministries for Mercy educational institutions. (CJH)
