CHOICES, the Computerized Heuristic Occupational Information and Career Exploration Systems, was implemented in eight secondary schools in North York, Ontario. This evaluation focused on effectiveness of CHOICES in the career counseling process and in increasing students' career awareness, self-awareness, decision-making skills, and motivation. The first year of the two-year evaluation involved descriptive data collection and questionnaire development. Group interviews were conducted with students, teachers, counselors, and library staff. Questionnaires were completed by 114 of 220 participating students. Results indicated that students generally learned about CHOICES from a guidance counselor. They also received an orientation about CHOICES and completed a vocational profile before using the computer. Counselors discussed results with the students. Students made the most use of the programs "explore" option, which blends the individual's characteristics and suggests compatible occupations. Students were overwhelmingly positive. The major disadvantages reported by counselors were the amount of time required and operating problems. CHOICES compared favorably with other interest and aptitude tests for the third of the total respondents who were familiar with other measures.
