Teacher Renewal. Professional Issues, Personal Choices.
Bolin, Frances S., Ed.; Falk, Judith McConnell, Ed.
The 16 essays in this book assesss the problems inherent in the role of the teacher and offer perspectives on issues affecting life in the classroom. The three chapters in part one, "The Teacher and Teaching as a Vocation," are addressed to improving the teacher by attending to the inner needs of the individual. Teachers are seen as persons in search of meaning who choose to teach mostly for intrinsic, personal reasons. Part two, "The Teacher and Public Policy Issues," is comprised of three essays that demonstrate how the dilemmas of educational policy occur for teachers in terms of both theory and practice. The third part, "The Teacher and the Curriculum," considers teachers holistically, as human beings with overlapping realities, with social, cultural, and personal biographies. In the final part, "The Teacher and Personal Choice," four essays provide teachers with an opportunity to reflect and renew their commitment to teaching as a vocation. (JD)
