Sources for the Achievements of Black American Women in the Visual Arts.
Demery, Marie
Current publications tend to omit or present scant information about the past and present achievements of Black American women in the visual arts. The purpose of this document is to justify the need for including more Black female achievers in more visual arts publications. As a result of this increased inclusion, the psychosocial function of role modeling for the mentor process will be enhanced in art history. Descriptions of the content of the 63 reference sources have been omitted in order to emphasize the listings of 538 Black women achievers. A review of these references has disclosed that these individuals achieved and are achieving in one or more technique areas--thus a representation of the complete range of art careers. This document is also a precursor to the first comprehensive publication and exhibition entitled "The Past and Present Achievements of Black American Women in the Visual Arts." Additional references--17--are included for the related subjects of art careers, art history, mentors and cross-gender mentors. (Author)
