Environmental Emergency Preparedness. Outdoor Living Skills Series. Instructor Manual.
Deaton, Don
This instructor's manual contains 21 lesson plans to teach advanced skills to cope with emergency outdoor living situations and emphasizes being prepared, rather than survival. Written for the classroom teacher, but adaptable for other youth groups, the module contains subject information, lesson plans with activities, student handouts, a written evaluation, and a glossary and bibliography. Each lesson plan includes a title, teaching method, suggested time, purpose, curricula, instructional aids, required facilities, and a detailed topic outline. Lesson plan topics include psychology of survival, examples of emergency situations, common fears and stresses, field first-aid/self-aid for bleeding, effects of cold and heat on the body, fire building, shelter building using poncho pup tent and A-frame; and water procurement using plastic bag still. Other lessons include food procurement (wild edibles, traps and snares); food preparation techniques (planking and mud baking fish); using a signal mirror; direction finding (primitive indicators and star movement); improvising clothing and equipment (rabbit hide mittens, poncho wash basin, poncho bathtub); natural environmental emergencies (cold, tornado, lightning); and emergency kits. Appendices provide an environmental emergency situation test, wind chill chart, items for automobile emergency kit, emergency kit sheet, suggested evaluation activities, and an instructor's key.
