Follow-Up Study of 1984 Harper Career Alumni. Research Report Series Volume XV, No. 7.
Lucas, John A.
As part of an ongoing evaluation of the career programs at William Rainey Harper College (WRHC), a follow-up study was conducted of 1984 program graduates, and results were compared with those from earlier surveys. Questionnaires were sent to 763 students who graduated from career programs in 1983-84, requesting demographic information, current education or employment status, and views of WRHC programs and services. Study findings, based on a 76% response rate, included the following: (1) 42% of the graduates had been Nursing or Data Processing majors; (2) almost 53% of the respondents were employed full-time and not in college, representing the highest full-time employment level since 1970; (3) 11.5% were employed part-time and not in college, which was the highest level in WRHC's history; (4) almost 6% of those employed were self-employed; (5) only 30.5% of the graduates were continuing their education, representing the lowest portion since 1971; (6) total unemployment was 5%; (7) 69% were in jobs closely related to their major at WRHC; (8) the average annual salary among graduates was $18,124, up 8% from 1982; and (9) internship opportunities, teaching faculty, the learning resources center, disabled/hearing impaired services, and course selection were features of the college rated most highly. The questionnaire and extensive data tables detailing results are included in the report. (LAL)
