During fall 1986, the Older Adult Services (OAS) program at De Anza Community College (California) administered a needs assessment survey to a representative number of students registered in OAS classes. The study sought to determine the mean age, educational and occupational background of the population served; and to determine students' educational perceptions, understandings, and needs. Surveys were administered in 19 classes at 14 different facilities to 275 students and 15 staff members and administrators. Study findings included the following: (1) 58% of the respondents were between the ages of 65 and 79; (2) 92% had graduated from high school, and 39% had graduated from a two- or four-year college; (3) asked to indicate their primary occupation(s) during their working years, 62 respondents indicated housewife/househusband, 59 indicated secretary, and 57 indicated teacher; (4) the highest rated subject areas were travel, world affairs, history, art, and personal legal affairs; (5) 31% indicated a desire to learn new job skills in the area of computers; (6) respondents indicated their greatest information needs were in the areas of finances, recreation, nutrition, and medicine; and (7) 160 of 185 respondents indicated that their educational needs had been met by the OAS in the past.
