Literacy and Libraries: A Planning Manual.

Designed to help librarians and trustees make informed planning decisions concerning the development or improvement of library literacy services, this manual discusses the following topics: (1) the problem of illiteracy; (2) identifying adult new learners; (3) providers of literacy services; (4) the library's role in literacy activities; (5) cooperation with other providers of literacy services; (6) the community role; (7) making the decision to participate in literacy activities; (8) target groups for literacy services; (9) setting goals and objectives; (10) the availability of resources; (11) evaluating the literacy project; (12) publicizing library services; and (13) materials selection. Suggestions for further reading are provided for most topics. Five appendices include a selected list of publishers of adult education materials, a planning checklist, a sample needs assessment survey, a sample evaluation survey, and a levels of materials chart.
