Developmental Education at the College of Saint Teresa: Mentoring and Development Portfolio Transcript Program.
Orlett, Johanna
The use of mentoring and development portfolio/transcript programs for college students is considered. The development portfolio enables students to document activities they selected to achieve their development goals, and may involve journal keeping, logging of courses and activities, and individualized growth projects. Development transcripts document students' progress for the college. Mentors are volunteers whom students ask to assist with their growth projects. The literature on the role of mentor, especially in colleges, is reviewed, as well as research on the mentoring role, and the theoretical bases for successful mentoring. Program evaluation results for the College of Saint Teresa (Minnesota) and a history of student and mentor participation are considered, and protocol materials are provided, including an example of a student's goals and outcomes and forms for documenting activities, courses, and projects. The following mentor training programs with portfolio/transcripts components are also briefly described: Canisius College, Andrews University, and Azusa Pacific University. (SW)
