Parent Education Workbook for Mainstreamed Students. Teachers Guide. Contemporary Parenting Choices: Materials for Mainstreamed Classrooms. Module 4.
Iowa State Univ. of Science and Technology, Ames. Dept. of Home Economics Education.
The fourth part of a parenthood education curriculum series, the Parent Education Workbook consists of a teachers guide (and 12 student lesson units not replicated in the guide) divided into two parts, the first part focusing on relationships and the second on child care. The units are intended for use by mainstreamed mentally disabled (MD) and learning disabled (LD) high school students in home economics classrooms. Issues addressed by the curriculum were selected as a result of an Iowa State University assessment of parenthood education needs of mildly mentally disabled high school students. In order of priority these issues are: the decision to parent, careers and work, marriage and parenthood, decision making and goal setting, resource management, nutrition, human reproduction and contraception, job training, effects of divorce, single parent families, and family members' need for privacy. The teachers guide explains characteristics of MD and LD students, methods and strategies for working with these high school students, the format of the student lesson materials and suggestions for their use, the supplementary relationship of these materials to the first three Contemporary Parenting Choices curriculum guides, and the evaluation items which accompany each unit. Learning limitations and associated teaching strategies for the mentally disabled are outlined and a detailed listing of curriculum units and lessons and their corresponding pages in the Contempory Parenting Choices guides is provided. Unit tests (multiple choice format) are included in the guide, for all 12 workbook units, together with a teachers answer key. (DB)
