The Teaching of Composition: A Study of the Approach to Writing Skills in Ontario Faculties of Education and Teachers' Colleges, Related Surveys, and a Bibliography. Volume II.
Steele, James; And Others
Representing the second phase of a study surveying the instructional approach to writing skills in Ontario teacher training institutions as well as secondary composition instruction in general, this volume contains three reviews and a survey. The first review discusses the scope of language arts texts in relation to preservice teacher education courses in seventh and eighth grade composition instruction and addresses problematic aspects of certain language arts texts. The second review contains commentary on some 140 articles and monographs dealing with practical classroom procedures for composition instruction at the secondary level. The main areas covered include prewriting, writing, rewriting, sequential teaching methods, grammar and rhetoric, and responding to writing, followed by a list of works cited. The third review analyzes composition texts approved for use in Ontario's secondary schools, recommending that the Ministry provide financial support for the production of new textbooks in this area. The survey summarizes the replies from Canadian and foreign correspondents about recent research and preservice teacher education programs in their respective institutions, providing detailed information from California, New Zealand, and Scotland. Four recommendations are presented as a result of this evaluation, accompanied by a brief comment indicating their possible relevance to the Ontario system. (JD)
