How To Prepare Materials for New Literates.
International Reading Association, Newark, DE.
Designed to help educators prepare materials for newly literate individuals, this guidebook is comprised of four chapters. The first two chapters provide background material explaining the needs and requirements of newly literate people. Chapter 1 characterizes "post-literacy" materials and services and discusses the role of the post-literacy facilitator in working with the community and with outside institutions. Chapter 2 details how new literates can, through participatory research, work with educators to define their needs and to use the literacy skills that they have achieved. The remaining two chapters provide specific advice for the new writer, editor, or publisher. These chapters explain the technical aspects of turning ideas into print and suggest ways of determining the success of the printed materials that result. Specifically, chapte 3 discusses: (1) the production of a bulletin board, a local newspaper, and books; (2) the design of printed materials; and (3) print production in general. Chapter 4 provides some questions to be used by educators in evaluating the success of three types of materials produced for new literates: hand-lettered notices, community newspapers, and books. Answers to these questions are intended to help educators improve both the quality of future products and readers' use and enjoyment of their new skill. Figures and line drawings illustrate the text.
